Effective January 1st 1998, the municipal landscape in Lanark County changed, as local government re-organized to become more streamlined and efficient. The move was part of the Ontario Government's Bill 26.
The following is a recap of the final moves and amalgamations.
Beckwith Township
The Township of Beckwith remained a municipality however parts were annexed to the Town of Carleton Place.
Tay Valley Township (Formerly Bathurst Burgess Sherbrooke)
The townships of South Sherbrooke, Bathurst and North Burgess amalgamated to form the new Township of Bathurst North Burgess and South Sherbrooke. The name of the new township was later renamed to the Township of Bathurst Burgess Sherbrooke. As of June 2002, the Township of Bathurst Burgess Sherbrooke changed its name to Tay Valley.
Town of Carleton Place
Parts of the Township of Beckwith were annexed to the Town of Carleton Place.
Township of Drummond North Elmsley
The townships of Drummond and North Elmsley amalgamated to form the new Township of Drummond/North Elmsley.
Town of Mississippi Mills
The Town of Almonte, and the townships of Pakenham and Ramsay amalgamated to form the new Town of Mississippi Mills.
Town of Perth
Parts of the Township of North Elmsley were annexed to the Town of Perth.
Township of Lanark Highlands
The Village and Township of Lanark, the Township of Darling, and the Township of Lavant, Dalhousie and North Sherbrooke amalgamated into one municipality, the Township of Northwest Lanark. The name of the new township was later renamed to the Township of Lanark Highlands.
Township of Montague
The Township of Montague remained a municipality.
